London Ambulance Service covers an area of 620 sq. miles, serves one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities and is the busiest ambulance service in the UK. We handle over 1.9 million emergency calls from across the capital and attend more than 1.2 million incidents every single year as well as delivering a 24 hour NHS 111 Integrated Urgent Care Service in South East and North East London that we estimate will respond to around 1.4million urgent care calls by the end of the year.

 

We employ over 8,000 people who work or volunteer, across London to respond to the health needs of over eight million people who live, work and travel in the capital. We work closely with our NHS partners and are commissioned by 32 clinical commissioning groups spread across 5 sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) and NHS England for our specialist services. We work alongside London’s hospital, mental health and specialist trusts, as well as the five STPs across Greater London.

 

In addition we work in partnership with the other emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance and London’s Resilience Forums to make sure we are ready and prepared to respond to major incidents and ensure we keep Londoners safe.

As the only pan-London NHS provider we have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in integrating access to emergency and urgent care right across London.

 

By 2023 we will improve outcomes and experiences for all our patients by providing the right care to patients at the right time, and in the most cost effective way. This will mean up to 122,000 fewer patients being taken to emergency departments when their needs could be better met in a different way, and we will deliver significant efficiencies in avoided costs to the urgent and emergency care sector.

Job overview

As a member of the Integrated Patient Care team, you will answer and take charge of all our incoming 111 calls.  Utilising the NHS Pathways triage system, you will gain an initial assessment of both the patient and the situation in an efficient, reassuring manner.

Main duties of the job

Using excellent communication skills, you will assist and prioritise patients, supported by computer software to ensure and deliver a quality driven service to our callers.  Providing advice or guidance under the direction or supervision of a health care professional, you will ensure appropriate support is given to our patients.  In this role, you will also liaise with other agencies and healthcare providers and learn the necessary skills to manage the more challenging calls and situations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a 111 Health Advisor you will have an excellent telephone manner and commensurate communication skills.  With experience of dealing with the public over the phone, you will be able to follow and interpret policies and procedures and have the ability to work under pressure and remain calm.    

With a minimum of five GCSE’s, including English language, NVQ level 3 or equivalent you will be IT literate and enjoy working as part of a team. 

In order to be licensed to use the NHS Pathways system you will be required to successfully complete a 5 week training course to provide you with the necessary skills and clinical knowledge. Please note the first three weeks are full time Monday – Friday.

PLEASE NOTE: During the first four week training period, you will receive a trainee salary of £19,641 (including Outer London High Cost Area Supplement). This includes 75% of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate and 100% of the Outer London High Cost Area Supplement applicable.

After a 4-week training period, your starting salary will be £23,521 (including Outer London High Cost Area Supplement) rising to £24,926 (inclusive). This salary will be pro rata if your contracted hours are part-time. In addition to this, there will be an unsocial hours payment dependent on rota.
