London Ambulance Service covers an area of 620 sq. miles, serves one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities and is the busiest ambulance service in the UK. We handle over 1.9 million emergency calls from across the capital and attend more than 1.2 million incidents every single year as well as delivering a 24 hour NHS 111 Integrated Urgent Care Service in South East and North East London that we estimate will respond to around 1.4million urgent care calls by the end of the year.


We employ over 8,000 people who work or volunteer across London to respond to the health needs of over eight million people who live, work and travel in the capital. We work closely with our NHS partners and are commissioned by 32 clinical commissioning groups spread across 5 sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) and NHS England for our specialist services. We work alongside London’s hospital, mental health and specialist trusts, as well as the five STPs across Greater London.


In addition we work in partnership with the other emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance and London’s Resilience Forums to make sure we are ready and prepared to respond to major incidents and ensure we keep Londoners safe. As the only pan-London NHS provider we have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in integrating access to emergency and urgent care right across London.


By 2023 we will improve outcomes and experiences for all our patients by providing the right care to patients at the right time, and in the most cost effective way. This will mean up to 122,000 fewer patients being taken to emergency departments when their needs could be better met in a different way, and we will deliver significant efficiencies in avoided costs to the urgent and emergency care sector.

Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a diverse team, supporting the clinical education programmes for Ambulance Operations in one of the busiest ambulance services in the world. The Clinical Education and Standards department have moved to brand-new specialist education facilities, located at Dockside and Brentford and Barking and the Education Business Support Managers have a significant role in leading the future of education and developing the clinical workforce to support the people of London.

The successful candidate will be someone with strong communication and organisation skills. You will know how to motivate a team and will be a great problem-solver, finding innovative solutions for the day to day running of the function, while remaining flexible and adaptable in a fast-moving environment. You will take pride in your work, be proactive and will be a role-model for civility in the workplace.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the Clinical Education Manager – Ambulance Services (East), the post is located at Dockside Education Centre, although pan London travel is required.

You will provide accurate, timely and reliable information to the Clinical Education Manager and their direct reports and maintain high levels of confidentiality.

You will provide appropriate managerial assistance to ensure agreed objectives are articulated and delivered through an efficient, high quality, confidential and timely service.

You will require strong influencing and assertiveness skills and be able to anticipate and identify the needs and concerns of your line manager and ensure that appropriate action is taken without instruction.

You will also be a role model of positive, inspirational and highly visible leadership, demonstrating the Service’s values and adapting communication and style to match the situation and people.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist in the delivery of key performance, quality and productivity targets which contribute to the achievement of the KPIs/Group scorecard which will be reviewed at monthly Chief Executive Performance Reviews and which show evidence of continuous improvement.
  •  Delivery of objectives.
  • Timely provision of high quality reports and papers, using systems to collate and interpret data.
  •  Timely and successful delivery of all projects in work portfolio.
  • Plan and organise a wide range of on-going complex activities and programmes in line with CES objectives, formulating and adjusting plans as required.
  • Maintain responsibility for personal development including attendance at seminars and training courses as agreed with the Education Manager.

Qualifications, Accreditations, Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to masters level or equivalent professional qualification or equivalent experience
  • Leadership qualification or equivalent experience
  • Full, driving licence, valid in UK and no more than 3 penalty points
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching / training qualification or equivalent experience


Essential criteria
  • Current or previous experience working in the NHS or in urgent service settings
  • Experience of working within multi disciplinary teams
  • Delivering and improving operational training to drive up performance
  • Experience in teaching / education
  • Working with senior managers in pressured situations
  • Ability to plan course programmes and create training materials
  • Developing staff within a team context
  • Setting and implementing long term plans to achieve objectives and targets.
