London Ambulance Service covers an area of 620 sq. miles, serves one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities and is the busiest ambulance service in the UK. We handle over 1.9 million emergency calls from across the capital and attend more than 1.2 million incidents every single year as well as delivering a 24 hour NHS 111 Integrated Urgent Care Service in South East and North East London that we estimate will respond to around 1.4million urgent care calls by the end of the year.


We employ over 8,000 people who work or volunteer across London to respond to the health needs of over eight million people who live, work and travel in the capital. We work closely with our NHS partners and are commissioned by 32 clinical commissioning groups spread across 5 sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) and NHS England for our specialist services. We work alongside London’s hospital, mental health and specialist trusts, as well as the five STPs across Greater London.


In addition we work in partnership with the other emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance and London’s Resilience Forums to make sure we are ready and prepared to respond to major incidents and ensure we keep Londoners safe. As the only pan-London NHS provider we have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in integrating access to emergency and urgent care right across London.


By 2023 we will improve outcomes and experiences for all our patients by providing the right care to patients at the right time, and in the most cost effective way. This will mean up to 122,000 fewer patients being taken to emergency departments when their needs could be better met in a different way, and we will deliver significant efficiencies in avoided costs to the urgent and emergency care sector.

Job overview

The Head of Clinical Education will provide leadership and management for the delivery of education and development services within the Clinical Education and Standards department. They will ensure the delivery of clinical education and standards are met and maintained to the agreed level throughout the service, and will play a key role in the reform and development of the service, to align with future needs of the Trust, Pan London NHS and the communities they serve. This role also maintains a strong link to external providers as the key contact for Higher Education providers supporting paramedic education in London.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a HCPC/NMC registrant who has experience in managing education programs and education teams. The successful candidate will be a strong leader, who will be a role-model civility in the workplace, supporting the senior leadership team as we move through a period of cultural change.

You will be able to lead change and convey a clear vision for the department, aligned to the strategic goals of the Trust. You will take pride in your work, be a great problem-solver, and be well-organised with the ability to multi-task and to work well as part of a busy department while remaining flexible and adaptable in a fast-moving environment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a diverse team, overseeing the clinical education programs across Ambulance Operations, 999, 111 and Integrated Urgent Care responses for one of the busiest ambulance services in the world. The department will be moving to brand-new specialist education facilities in 2021, located at Dockside and Brentford, creating the platform to achieve an ambitious change for how clinical education is delivered. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Influencing the development of effective strategy and operational policies for delivering clinical education to ensure competent and capable frontline staff can achieve high standards of care across London.
  •  Key contribution to the strategy for supporting and ensuring alignment of services’ standards across the range of education programs Pan-London, from in-house and external providers, to meet Trust needs.
  •  Supporting and implementing organisational change and initiatives that support excellence in clinical education and standards.
  •  Making decisions about the delivery and monitoring of education and training, that impact patient care, the public, staff and the Service using well-informed judgement and when necessary in collaboration with a range of stakeholders.
  •  Maintain effective relationships with partner education providers to support workforce planning and relevant curriculum for best patient outcomes.
  •  Deputise for and represent the Deputy Director of CES when required.
  •  Identifying examples of best practice in education and work with the Senior Management Team to ensure that LAS benefits from relevant innovations in the field and developing and championing new initiatives or projects as necessary.
  • Providing professional leadership in clinical education and supporting others’ expertise and development in relevant fields.
  • Being a role model leader by demonstrating effective and appropriate behaviours in both day-to-day operations and in high risk, difficult and distressing situations; being flexible by demonstrating appropriate leadership styles and adapting communication to match the situation and audience.
  •  Regular exposure to distressing, stressful and emotional situations as the lead for decisions on learner’s failing to progress, special consideration for individual progress, disciplinary situations, investigations, grievances, attendance and conduct issues.
  • Managing a budget, delegating responsibility to managers for expenditure, promoting cost-effective, value-for-money services.

Qualifications, Accreditations, Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Master’s Degree level in a relevant field, or the demonstrable equivalent
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level equivalen
  • Educated to degree level (BSc) in an appropriate healthcare/management area
  • Full, driving licence, valid in the UK and no more than 3 penalty points
  • Clear and robust evidence of continuous personal and career development
  • HCPC/NMC Registered with demonstrable recent experience
Desirable criteria
  • PhD or equivalent with research in health or education related field


Essential criteria
  • Clear evidence of line management experience at a senior level
  • Clear evidence of supervising, developing and motivating staff in a medium-large sized team
  • Senior Management level experience including working in collective decisionmaking groups such as organisational wide programmes of work or healthcare partnerships that may impact service delivery
  • Evidence of change management success and delivery in a similar Senior Management or Leadership role.
  • Specialist knowledge within training, clinical education and standards
  • Extensive experience leading a clinical education function
  • Experience conducting highly complex investigations and writing reports that may include sensitive or contentious information
  • Influencing at a strategic/policy level
